New Highly Efficient Scuderi Split Cycle Air Hybrid Engine

Scuderi's new Split Cycle Air Hybrid Engine

Scuderi Group in West Springfield, Massachusetts, has recently developed the "Scuderi Split Cycle Air Hybrid Engine" (catchy i know). It is effectively a split-cycle internal combustion engine, but its revolutionary design has modified the common Otto cycle and instead of being only 33% efficient as most engines are, this new system is (in testing) claiming to reach efficiency levels of 40% far and above any other internal combustion engine, and best of all at this level up-to 80% of the toxic and atmosphere damaging gases are not present.

The initial invention was by Carmelo J. Scuderi and apart from the new stroke system, has a range of features to increase power output. One is a hybrid air system which takes energy from braking and stores it compressed air which can be then used in the engine or other areas of the car, to boost efficiency.

So how does it work? The conventional system runs on a four stroke cycle this new system split up this cycle into across two cylinders, one for compression and one for power. The gas is compressed in the compression cylinder and travels through an inlet passage to the power cylinder where it is ignited. The gas passage contains a series of uniquely timed valves which maintain the pressure in the gas throughout all four stages of the cycle, as the power piston moves to top dead centre of its cycle the gas is released into the power cylinder and fired to induce the power stroke. a very good animation of the system can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Scuderi_Split_Cycle_Engine _-_Cycle.gif (or at the top of this post if the animation plays properly!)

By splitting the cycle the Scuderi engine brings a number of advantages to its unique system. The dedicated cylinders can be optimised for the job they are doing as opposed to being multi-tasking like in a normal engine, this boosts their efficiency and it make their engine different to any other around. This means the power stroke is longer and the gases thermal efficiency increases (see the Miller Effect), the compression cylinder can be made wider and as such supercharging the gas in the power piston, increasing power. On top of this the cylinders can be offset at almost any angle to maximize mechanical efficiency and placement within the vehicle.

The key features of it are that:

1. has an exceptionally fast combustion rate
2. a large increase in thermal efficiency
3.a large reduction in NOx emissions (Nitrogen Oxide)

for greater detail there is a breakdown of all the stages and detailed explanations at http://www.scuderigroup.com/technology/theory_of_operation.html

The engine already has 35 issued patents and 60 patents pending in over 50 countries related to the design on the engine, including: Cargine Engineering (Sweden), Gates Corp (Denver), Schaeffler Group (Germany) and the engineering division of Germany's Robert Bosch GmbH.

Overall this engine design is an exciting new development in the world of cars, it could revolutionize the four stroke cycle which has been pretty much unchanged for the best part of 100 years

this sounds fantastic, when will this be on the market, i want to buy a car with this engine design, this is the engine of the future, i hope so, good luck

From what I understand it will take three years after the first license is issued to build it, and get into a car. The engine manafactures are waiting for the engine to run fuel, then you may start seeing some news about it.

what are you talking about, the engine prototyoe is done, your comments are not correct, by the way who are you and how do you know what you wrote is correct. Please answer my request for information, thank you, thunderrumble.

where are you captj, no reply because you were wrong, ok, read the news paper, buddy

Hi! If you visit http://www.energyblogs.com/mpg you will see an engine design that will put the Scuderi design to shame. DJames

d james, who are you, and why so negative

thunderrumble said...

d james, scuderi is gonna change the world of all engines 2010

Hi thunderrumble,
The reason that I am so negative is that compressed air is not an option, look at MDI cars who have (a) a working model of their engine (b) it isn't practical. They have had deals with S. Africa for the past 20 years France for longer and with India , release date 2008 we are now in 2009, does this give you some idea. Many other countries have been taken in!!!
I, on the other hand, am an honest man AND I think my design IF you went to my site will work!!!

The technology is proven in a prototype now, argue all you like, i have a feeling it could prove its worth in a few years time when manufacturers start to utilize it in making greener petrol cars

ON WHAT CYLCE DOES FORMULA1 CAR ,dOES IT WORK????????IF OTTO CYCLE than will it be not costly????????

not costly, the same price as before

so what we have here is basicaly a forced air induction 2 stroke engine, but instead of having a turbo or supercharger you have an extra cylinder in line with the actual power producing cylinder that pre-compreses the air/fuel for the power producing cylinder. wouldnt the compresion cylinder take away power since it is attached to the crankshaft itself. not to mention that you have a much more larger piston that has to compress air that is moved by a smaller one, and then i would think that the compression piston would have to be bigger because pressure always tries to equalize itself so you would have around 75 percent of the original pressure from the compression cylinder.................. just leave the one compression cylder off and dump more technology into turbo systems that don't have near the amount of power robbing moving parts that im sure in future can be made even less complicated and more efficient. ingenious design non the less, i'll hand that to them. but i dont see this as practicle. i apologize for my spelling and feelings that i have hurt by voicing my opinion.

more from the above comment. this engine would probly use more fuel than a regular 4 stroke gasoline engine. for every rotation of the crank there is a power stroke. on a 4 stroke gas engine there is only one power stroke per every two rotations of the crank. and another is the added weight of the extra compression cylinder on this engine would just be wastefull if were to be put into a vechile. kudos on reducing the nox emmisions. toyota can basically elliminate nox with their variable valve timing system. so im not impressed. extremely fast combustion rate.. well no duh 2 strokes have alot more power because of the power stroke every revolution of the crankshaft compair to 2 or 4. if any doesnt know what im talking about as far as 2 and 4 strokes go, google it. its fairly simple to understand but i dont have the time to exspain.
